BIOGRAPHY
Cellist Ariana Nelson is a member of the boundary-breaking and critically acclaimed Carpe Diem String Quartet. When not on tour with her quartet, she is based in Arlington, Virginia, where she frequently performs with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera. Additionally, she maintains a private teaching studio and is a coach for the Crescendo chamber music program and the American Youth Philharmonic. As an avid proponent of new music, she has been an artist-faculty member at the Charles Ives Music Festival since 2017. Her interest in improvisation and folk music led her to co-found the Pacific Crest Trio in 2020. Before moving to the DC area, Ariana was a member of the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and served as an adjunct cello professor at Texas Southern University. Originally from Seattle, Ariana received her Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School, and her Bachelor of Music at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. In addition to making music, Ariana is a certified yoga teacher and loves the outdoors.
Dr. Michael Romans is the newest violinist in the Air Force Strings. Prior to joining the AirForce, he has held positions in the Virginia Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, Lansing Symphony and is the former Concertmaster of the Adrian Symphony Orchestra. Originally from Springfield, Virginia, Michael began studying violin at the age of 10 under the instruction of Jim Batts. An avid chamber musician, Michael is a founding member of the Continuum Chamber Collective; an ensemble dedicated to commissioning works and performing chamber masterpieces throughout the DC metro area. He has appeared in music festivals across the country as well as internationally. Most recently, Michael appeared as co- concertmaster of the Aspen Conducting Academy Orchestra. He has held leadership positions in other festival orchestras including National Repertory Orchestra and Schleswig- Holstein Festival Orchestra to name a few. Other notable festival appearances include Sarasota Music Festival and performances in Carnegie Hall with the New York String Orchestra. Michael completed his Bachelors at Indiana University double majoring in Violin Performance at the Jacobs School of Music and Business Studies from the Kelley School of Business. He completed his Masters and Doctorate degrees at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance under the tutelage of Fabiola Kim and Danielle Belen.
