BIOGRAPHY
Nonoka Mizukami is a percussionist and educator based in Baltimore, MD, who is committed to performing and collaborating multidisciplinary projects with living composers and visual artists in various solo, chamber, and orchestra settings in both Japan and the U.S, such as mixed instrumental ensemble Pique Collective. She is also committed to growing music education for young musicians at Peabody Preparatory where she serves as a director of the percussion group and a faculty member for percussion studies.
Flutist Meghan Shanley Alger explores sounds on everything from harmonica and beer bottles to live electronics, knitting needles, and pencils. With an uncanny ability to create specific atmospheres, even the New York Times has noted her “singing into her flute to produce surreal and eerie timbres.” Her performance credits include the Kennedy Center, AMP by Strathmore and Peabody Library of Baltimore, as well as Symphony Space and Carnegie Hall.
Shanley Alger uses commissioning and programming to advance social change, designing concerts that provoke reflection and audience participation. Current projects include a debut album of living women composers, Making Waves, with works by Pamela Z, Lunon, Socolofsky, and Nourbakhsh. The ensemble she co-directs, Balance Campaign, recently received funding from Chamber Music America to commission composer Jeffry Mumford. They are Ensemble-In-Residence at the upcoming Women’s Composers Festival of Hartford where they will premiere new works by Kirstin Volness and Alexandra T Bryant.
As a believer in the power of collective action, Shanley Alger is on the board of directors for Flute Society of Washington, whose mission is to engage, educate and elevate flutists of all levels. She is Director of their annual Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention that attracts 650 attendees and exhibitors and features world-renowned performers.
