Biography
Born in Seoul, South Korean pianist Bo-Kyung Hwang has performed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. Ms. Bo-Kyung made her professional concerto debut in 2002, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the Seoul Royal Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, she made her solo recital debut at The Mozart Hall in Seoul. She has also performed with the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra in Michigan and selected to perform Beethoven Sonata, Op. 110 to great acclaim at the 2009 World Piano Pedagogy Conference in Arizona on a program of outstanding students from Korea. Recent performances throughout England, Italy, Austria, and the United States have taken Ms. Bo-Kyung to many of the world’s most prestigious concert venues in cities such as Naples, Amalfi Coast, Salzburg, London, Wisconsin, Chicago, New York, Arizona, Michigan, Washington D.C, Maryland, Virginia, Main, and Florida.
Ms. Bo-Kyung has won numerous awards including the first prize at the 32nd International Young Artist Piano Competition and premiered Kaleidoscope by Li-Ly Chang in Kennedy Center, Washington D.C. Ms. Bo-Kyung is also a prize recipient of the Pauline Favin Memorial Award in Solo Piano and the Clara Ascherfeld Award in Accompanying and from Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. She was also received a full-tuition Collaborative fellowship from Bowdoin Festival. As a soloist, She has performed in many master classes for Aldo Ciccolini, Richard Goode, Ian Hobson, John Perry, Elizabeth Pridonoff, Jin Woo Jung, Leon Fleisher, the Andrew W.Mellon Foundation Chair in Piano at Johns Hopkins University as well as the recipient of the 2007 Kennedy Center Honors and subject of the 2006 Oscarnominated short documentary Two Hands: The Leon Fleisher Story. As a chamber musician, she has performed in master classes for Garrick Ohlsson, Steven Isserlis, Gidon Kremer’s Kremerata Baltica Chamber Orchestra.
In her chamber career, she collaborated with numerous artists and served as a studio pianist for the studios of Soovin Kim (Violin faculty at New England Conservatory, Former Violin Faculty at Peabody Institute and Stony Brook University), Alan Stepansky (Cello Faculty at Peabody Institute, Former Cello Faculty at Manhattan School of Music, Former Cellist at New York Philharmonic Orchestra), Blair Milton (Violinist at Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Violin Faculty at Northwestern University), Hans Jensen (Cello Faculty at Northwestern University), Anthony McGill (Former Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Clarinet Faculty at Peabody Institute). Ms. Bo-Kyung is currently assisting as a studio pianist of Jonathan Snowden (Former principal flutist at London Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Flute faculty at Shenandoah Conservatory)
Although born in South Korea, She received most of her early musical training in many countries including Mozarteum Summer Music Academy in Salzburg, Austria, The Piano festival in London, England, Amalfi Coast Music festival in Italy, Interlochen Arts Academy under T.J.Lymenstull in Michigan, the United States, and Korea National University of Arts of Music Preparatory Division in Korea. Ms. Bo-Kyung received the Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance from Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University under renowned pianist and professor, YongHi Moon. She received her Masters Degree in Piano Performance from Northwestern University. Attending Northwestern University on a full-tuition scholarship, she studied under the guidance of Steinway artist and Professor, Alan Chow. Other chamber coaches and mentors include Sylvia Wang, Elizabeth Buccheri, Nancy Stagnitta, Octavio Mas-Arocas, Michael Kannen, Seth Knopp, Alison Wells, Soovin Kim, Blair Milton, Alan Stepansky, Hans Jensen, Anthony McGill, Doris Lederer, and Jonathan Snowden.
Ms. Bo-Kyung is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) at Shenandoah Conservatory on a full-tuition scholarship and positioned as a Teaching Assistant.
