An Evening of Jazz-Inspired Folk Music<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Through the years, folk music has been ever-present as a form of music that allows people to tell stories of themselves and others, in a form that is accessible to a broad audience.  Tonight, we hope you will join us for a program including an eclectic mix of jazz and folk tunes.  In our previous performance at Emerson, we focused on the music of the Great American Songbook.  Tonight, we will include some of these tunes, but will also showcase some exceptional folk songs which have been influenced by jazz melodies and chord structure.  But, they are still folk songs, in that they tell relatable stories and are easy to listen to.  It\u2019s an eclectic mix, and we hope you\u2019ll enjoy the variety!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biography<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Susan Gaeta performs as both a soloist and as part of several musical endeavors and projects, including this jazz trio with Mike Sobel and Eugenio Ibarz. She enjoys singing and playing an eclectic mix of music on guitar. As a founding member of Trio Sefardi, a Sephardic traditional music group, she has performed in the Emerson Ave Salon in the past. Ann Midgette wrote in the Washington Post, \u201cGaeta\u2019s voice is compelling\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bassist Eugenio Ibarz was born in Barcelona (Spain). In the 90\u2019s he was a
freelance guitar player and teacher, giving lessons and playing electric guitar and bass in different bands. Eugenio moved to the U.S. in 2002, where he teaches bass and guitar, and performs in jazz and other musical styles in the DMV area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike Sobel began his musical journey at an early age, first playing trumpet and later focusing on guitar and mandolin. He discovered the blues and rock\u2019n\u2019roll early on, but turned to jazz in his twenties. Mike has studied jazz guitar extensively with teachers including Paul Bollenback, Andreas Oberg, Martin Taylor, and currently Steve Herberman. He performed as a pit musician with AMS (42d Street, Chicago), the Little Theater of Alexandria (Oklahoma, Das Barbecu), and the Reston Players (Curtains). Over the last several decades, he has organized and managed a jazz jam session out of his studio in Northern Virginia with a rotating cast of musicians. More recently, he has focused on his solo guitar skills and as a vocal accompanist, and has been performing in a duo with Susan Gaeta for the past 10 years. Mike can also be seen performing with his daughter Gina, a professional musician from Charlottesville, VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
