Violinist, Elizabeth Field is joined by cellist, Stephanie Vial in discussion about the baroque chaconne and the importance of thinking from the bass line. Starting with the great Bach chaconne for solo violin, Stephanie and Liz will demonstrate how the bass line provides the fundamental structure for this monumental work. Moving from there, the duo will explore how baroque bass lines function in developing baroque and classical phrasing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biographies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elizabeth Field <\/strong>enjoys an active career as a chamber musician and soloist on period and modern violin. Elizabeth is the co-director, along with cellist Stephanie Vial of the period instrument ensemble, The Vivaldi Project. She is also concertmaster for The Bethlehem Bach Orchestra and has served as a guest concertmaster for numerous ensembles around the country including the Washington Bach Consort, Opera Philadelphia, The National Philharmonic, Opera Lafayette, and the Charleston Bach Society. Field performs regularly with her chamber ensembles, The Vivaldi Project and ArcoVoce and is a frequent guest artist with the Mallarme Chamber Ensemble and Magnolia Baroque. Field holds a Doctorate in Historical Performance Practice from Cornell University and has served as a performance-practice coach for numerous universities and music schools including The Curtis Institute of Music, The Longy School of Music, Blair and Belmont Schools of Music and the Boston Conservatory of Music. The Vivaldi Project\u2019s critically acclaimed recordings of unknown 18th-century string trios (Discovering the Classical String Trio<\/em>) have been heralded as: \u201cSuperb…highly recommended..exquisite ensemble, vibrant sound and ardent cantabile represent period instrument playing at its best\u201d (Fanfare Magazine). Her collaborative DVD with fortepianist Malcolm Bilson titled: Performing the Score, was lauded by Emanuel Ax as \u201ctruly inspiring\u201d. Stephanie Vial<\/strong> is a widely respected cellist, praised for her technical flair and expressive sense of phrasing.  Stephanie performs regularly in early music ensembles throughout the US and has given solo and chamber music concerts, lectures, and master classes at numerous universities and institutions: including The Shrine to Music Museum in Vermillion, South Dakota, The University of Virginia, Duke University, Boston Conservatory, and The Curtis Institute of Music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with Elizabeth Field, she is the co-director of  The Vivaldi Project, as well as its educational arm, the Institute for Early Music on Modern Instruments, which offers professional string players the opportunity to study historical performance practices using their own modern instruments. Her book, The Art of Musical Phrasing in the Eighteenth Century: Punctuating the Classical \u201cPeriod,\u201d published by the University of Rochester Press Eastman Studies in Music series in 2008, is praised by Malcolm Bilson as “inspired scholarship” and “essential reading.” She has recorded for the Dorian Label, Naxos, Hungaroton, MSR classics, and Centaur Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephanie received her Bachelor Degree from Northwestern University, followed by a Master’s Degree at Indiana University and a D.M.A. in 18th-century performance practice from Cornell University. She has made Durham, NC her home since 1997, where she performs regularly and is a lecturer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Elizabeth Field
